First decide how you are leaving.
Before comparing liters, write down the first hour of your likely evacuation. Are you walking to a nearby meeting point, taking public transportation, or loading a car? Will you be holding a child’s hand, handling a pet, or using a mobility aid? Those details matter more than the bag’s marketing.
A backpack keeps your hands available. A duffel can organize a substantial vehicle kit, but carrying it across a parking lot and carrying it several miles are different jobs. Plan a way to leave essential supplies accessible if the vehicle becomes unavailable. An evacuation destination is usually a safe building, friend’s home, hotel, or official shelter—not automatically a wilderness campsite.
Three sizes, three different jobs.
Our small-kit option uses the Osprey Hikelite 28L backpack (Amazon affiliate link, opens in new tab). Treat it as a compact personal layer: documents, charging, a light, a change of clothing, personal essentials, and accessible water. Whether that fits depends on your own needs and how bulky your clothing is.
The Osprey Kestrel 48L backpack (Amazon affiliate link, opens in new tab) provides more room for layers and shared items. It also invites overpacking. A larger pack is useful only if its harness fits and its loaded weight remains manageable. Our Outdoor Products Mountain Duffel (Amazon affiliate link, opens in new tab) is the vehicle-oriented option for bulkier supplies. These are product suggestions, not a promise that every item in a preset kit will fit simultaneously.
Separate essentials from the equipment library.
Spread the load on a table. Put items you need to leave immediately in one group; equipment you might use later in another. Keep medications, identification, glasses, keys, phone, and necessary accessibility supplies in the immediate group. Follow your clinician’s advice about medication storage and spare supplies.
Use Outdoor Products Ultimate Dry Sack set (Amazon affiliate link, opens in new tab) to create clearly named modules: dry clothing, documents, and small essentials. Test whether you can find each module in low light. Water-resistant storage is helpful, but it is not permission to expose documents or electronics to floodwater.
Run a realistic carry test.
Pack the bag with its intended contents, including water. Wear your normal shoes and outer layer. Try stairs, doorways, sitting down, and picking something up. Adjust the load if you cannot comfortably handle the movements you expect to make. Repeat with anyone who will carry shared supplies; do not silently assign a heavy bag to the strongest person.
- Choose a destination and at least one alternate route.
- Check pack fit and the exact product size, not just capacity.
- Keep frequently needed items reachable without emptying the bag.
- Label shared supplies and assign who carries them.
- Repack after the test and put the bag somewhere accessible.
Use what you already own.
A functioning school backpack or travel bag can be a sensible starting point. Spend first on missing essentials and the arrangements that make departure possible. Buying an expensive pack is not a substitute for transport, a destination, or a household plan. Browse our kits as a checklist, then remove items that do not serve your actual situation.
Useful gear. Clear limits.
